About half of adults in the U.S. over the age of 20 have a refractive error requiring a prescription. Refractive error occurs when the eye cannot properly focus light. To correct refractive error a refraction is needed. During a refraction the doctor will use special instruments to determine the lens prescription that is needed to focus images on the back of the eye and provide the best vision possible. There are multiple types of refractive error including myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and presbyopia.
