A cataract is diagnosed through a simple eye examination in our state-of-the-art offices. As a progressive disease that advances slowly most of the time it may take months or years until the cataract gets to the point where our surgeon will perform
St. Charles eye surgery to remove it. Basically, it is up to the patient to tell our doctor when the cataract is affecting their lifestyle enough to warrant its removal. Cataract removal has become a very common surgery that is performed as an outpatient procedure. Our doctor makes a slit in the cornea through either conventional methods or by using a special laser and then removes the lens by a process called phacoemulsification, which uses ultrasound to break up the clouded lens into little pieces and that are then suctioned out. Once the old lens has been removed our doctor replaces it with an artificial lens. The typical intraocular lens (IOL) is a single vision lens geared to restore distance vision but there are multi-focal IOLs available that our doctor can implant instead.
The whole
