One of the areas our practice specializes in is complex cataract care. A cataract exists when there is a clouding of the natural lens that is located inside the eye. This clouding is caused by a thickening of the eye’s lens. This causes the lens to become clouded to the point that light is distorted or is even unable to reach the retina at the back of the eye. If left untreated, a cataract can cause blindness. However, today cataract surgery is relatively easy and quite painless. Often it is done with the assistance of a laser. Our

When cataract surgery is performed, the cloudy lens is removed and replaced by a clear manmade lens. This is all done through a small incision that is made in the side of the cornea. This cut can be made by a laser or other instrument. Ultrasound vibrations are inserted into the eye that then break the cloudy lens into small pieces. All lens fragments are removed by suction through the small cut that was made to the cornea. Once the cataract is removed, our doctor will replace the lens with a new intraocular lens. This lens is permanent, and will require no special care. The optical power of the lens is predetermined by the surgeon, and will restore normal vision for the patient. Many times, patients will not need eyeglasses after the surgery; or if they do, it is on a greatly reduced basis. Cataract surgery will usually take less than an hour. Often patients are awake during the procedure. They are often given a sedative and numbing drops are placed in the eye. General anesthesia is rarely used during this type of surgery. Our
